At last, the international break is behind us. With the November hiatus now concluded, MLS can jump back into action, re-entering a postseason of thrilling matches just in the nick of time.
For the teams in the playoffs, the wait has been even longer. FC Cincinnati, Inter Miami CF, the Philadelphia Union, San Diego FC, and the Vancouver Whitecaps have had 15 days off; Minnesota United FC and New York City FC have been idle for 16 days; and LAFC has not participated in a competitive match for 20 days.
To help us remember the journey of these eight teams to the conference semifinals, ESPN has enlisted Lizzy Becherano and Jon Arnold, along with the rest of our U.S. soccer team, to offer predictions on who they believe will advance to the final four.
Eastern Conference

2. FC Cincinnati vs. 3. Inter Miami
Sunday, 5 p.m. ET
Star Player: Lionel Messi is the undeniable star of any Inter Miami match-up. After a Golden Boot-winning season, Messi has been pivotal in Miami’s advancement past Round 1, scoring five goals and providing one assist in three matches against Nashville SC.
Cincinnati has previously bested Miami with a 3-0 victory in July, but they must remain vigilant to counter Messi’s playoff prowess.
X-factor: While Inter Miami has Messi, FC Cincinnati counters with a formidable trio: Evander, Brenner, and Kévin Denkey. Individually, each has shined at different moments, but together they present a powerful offensive force.
Cincinnati’s defense and midfield have integrated well this season, positioning them as a formidable threat against Miami’s star-studded attacks.
Predictions
An extremely close contest is anticipated, but Inter Miami is expected to edge out Cincinnati by a decisive goal from one of their key players. Miami enters this knockout match with their full squad intact, a significant factor for head coach Javier Mascherano. — Becherano
Despite each team needing to neutralize the others’ star players, Messi’s determination to lead Miami is evident, which may prove too overwhelming for Cincinnati. — Arnold
Cincinnati’s recent playoff success gives them confidence, but facing it off against Messi in peak form would be a significant challenge. Inter Miami seems to hold a slight advantage with their potent offensive lineup. — Jeff Carlisle
1. Philadelphia Union vs. 5. New York City FC
Sunday, 7:45 p.m. ET
Star Player: The Union’s defense is incredibly solid and often overlooked. With Jakob Glesnes and Kai Wagner leading the charge, they’ve relinquished only 35 goals this entire season, earning them the Supporters’ Shield.
X-factor: Tai Baribo has emerged as a crucial contributor this season, scoring 16 goals and providing three assists, making him indispensable for the Union.
Tactical Consideration: New York City FC will face an uphill battle without key player Alonso Martínez due to injury, forcing the team to adapt their strategies significantly.
Predictions
With Martínez injured, the scale tips decidedly in favor of the Union, who boast a well-rounded lineup with minimal weaknesses to exploit, giving them the edge for a finals berth. — Becherano
Philadelphia will lean on their capable defense, particularly with NYCFC missing their key scorer, enhancing their prospects of advancing in the tournament. — Arnold
Western Conference

2. Vancouver Whitecaps vs. 3. LAFC
Saturday, 9:30 p.m. ET
Star Player: Son Heung-Min has quickly established himself as a key player for LAFC, showcasing his exceptional skills and chemistry on the field since his summer signing.
Predictions
Vancouver has home turf advantage and will rely on their supporters to push them to victory; their resilience may outweigh LAFC’s star power in a tightly contested matchup. — Arnold
LAFC, with their attacking firepower, makes them a formidable opponent; if their dynamic duo can find their rhythm, the Caps will face a tough challenge. — Becherano
1. San Diego FC vs. 4. Minnesota United
Monday, 10 p.m. ET
Star Player: Dayne St. Clair, the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, will be crucial for Minnesota following their recent penalties success in the playoffs.
Predictions
San Diego’s depth could be key if they can navigate recent injuries and maintain their energetic play style, potentially edging out the Loons with a critical goal. — Arnold
