Players sent off at the 2026 World Cup will be banned for one match. This applies to both straight red cards and dismissals for two cautions in the same game. FIFA may also issue additional penalties if it considers them warranted.
Three players were shown red cards in the tournament’s opening match. As a result, South Africa’s Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane will miss the game against the Czech Republic, while Mexico defender César Montes will be unavailable for the match against South Korea.
Suspensions can also result from card accumulation across matches. Any player who receives two yellow cards will serve a one-match ban. Yellow cards are reset after the group stage and again after the quarter-finals.
