Among the first 16 to go, 12 finished last in their groups: Czech Republic, Qatar, Haiti, Turkey, Curacao, Tunisia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Uzbekistan and Panama.
The other four early exits were the third-placed teams with the weakest records: Iran, South Korea, Scotland and Uruguay.
The first 10 nations knocked out in the last 32 were South Africa, Japan, Germany, the Netherlands, Ivory Coast, Sweden, Ecuador, DR Congo, Senegal and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
