USMNT’s Balogun Shines…

Folarin Balogun, a forward for the United States, scored a goal but also received a red card as Monaco suffered a 4-1 defeat against Lens in Ligue 1 on Saturday.

After netting his first Champions League goal during the week, Balogun converted a penalty late in the first half for Monaco.

However, after being named to the U.S. roster for the upcoming friendlies against Paraguay and Uruguay, Balogun was shown a red card just before halftime for a reckless challenge on Mamadou Sangare.

At that point, Lens had already secured a 3-1 lead, bolstered by goals from Odsonne Édouard, Wesley Saïd, and Sangaré.

Saïd added his second goal after the break, helping Lens match Marseille at the top of Ligue 1 with 25 points, while putting pressure on the injury-affected Paris Saint-Germain.

Both teams are just one point ahead of the reigning champions, PSG, which will face Lyon on Sunday.

In another match, Angel Gomes and Mason Greenwood, both English players, scored for Marseille in their 3-0 victory over Brest, allowing them to surge to the top of the table based on goal difference.

Gomes found the net with a direct free kick in the 25th minute, marking his third goal of the season, while a mistake by goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki contributed to the score. Greenwood then scored from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute after a foul on Igor Paixão.

Veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang capped off the scoring in the 82nd minute after finishing a cross from Matt O’Riley.

If Lyon wins on Sunday, they would close the gap to just one point behind PSG, who are missing key players such as Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Nuno Mendes, and Achraf Hakimi due to injuries.
