Chelsea winger Estêvão stated that he adhered to the coach’s orders and allowed his teammate Lucas Paquetá to take Brazil’s second penalty during their 1-1 friendly tie against Tunisia on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old Estêvão successfully converted a penalty in the 44th minute to equalize the match.

However, when Brazil received another penalty in the 77th minute, coach Carlo Ancelotti designated Paquetá instead of Estêvão to take the shot, which unfortunately went over the crossbar.

“It was a directive from the coach,” Estêvão remarked.

“I was eager to take the penalty, but I respected the decision made. Supporting my teammate was important to me. Although he missed, we need to stay positive, train hard, and improve because we must capitalize on these chances in a World Cup.”

Ancelotti explained his rationale behind the decision.

“I decided to change the penalty taker to relieve some of the pressure off Estêvão and brought in Paquetá, who is typically reliable from the spot,” Ancelotti said post-match.

Paquetá expressed regret over his missed opportunity.

“I apologize for not converting the penalty. It’s disappointing; we could have won with that goal. I usually succeed in these situations, but my eagerness to score led me to act prematurely before my final kick,” he reflected.

“I will work on refining my approach to ensure I make the most of the next opportunity to assist the team.”

Despite Brazil ending the year without a victory, Estêvão chose to focus on the positives.

Having joined Chelsea from Palmeiras for £29 million ($38.6 million) over the summer, he has settled well into life in the Premier League.

Estêvão has scored five goals in 11 appearances for Brazil.

“This year has been particularly special for me,” he said. “There haven’t been many highs and lows; I managed to navigate everything that unfolded. Being part of the national team is a testament to the hard work I’ve put in at my club and at home, and I take great pride in representing our team.”

“We always come here to contribute, and I’m thrilled to do just that.”
