Hansi Flick hailed Barcelona’s “perfect day” as the Spanish champions secured a commanding 4-0 victory against Athletic Club in their long-awaited return to the Spotify Camp Nou on Saturday.
Robert Lewandowski netted the first goal at the renovated stadium, which is still a work in progress. Ferran Torres added two more while Fermín López also registered a goal, allowing Barça to move ahead of Real Madrid, who are set to face Elche on Sunday, atop LaLiga based on goal difference.
This match marked Barça’s first at Camp Nou since its closure for renovations in May 2023, following more than two years of games played at the Olympic Stadium.
“For everyone — players, staff, coaches — it was a special game, and for the fans to be back in this stadium was an incredible feeling,” Flick stated in a post-match news conference.
“We secured three points with a 4-0 scoreline, which wasn’t easy, especially in the first half against Athletic. But in the end, everything went our way. I’m pleased with the clean sheet, the four goals, and the three points — it was the perfect day for us.”
The stadium is still awaiting the addition of its third tier and roof, with a maximum attendance of 45,157 for the match against Athletic. The club anticipates receiving approval to increase capacity to over 60,000 in the new year, eventually aiming for a grand total of 105,000, making it the largest in Europe.
For many Barça players, including goal scorer Fermín, goalkeeper Joan García, and defender Pau Cubarsí, this was their debut at Camp Nou, while it also marked Flick’s first time coaching the team at the stadium.
“Walking down the stairs and seeing all the fans as we approached the pitch was an incredible feeling,” the German coach remarked.

“Years ago, after being let go from a third division team, I dreamed of sitting on this bench — and now it’s come true. It’s an incredible journey for me.
“It exemplifies that with hard work and belief in one’s capabilities, anything is achievable. I conveyed this message to the team before the match. We have amazing fans and a fantastic club, and now we are back home, which feels unbelievable.”
Lewandowski’s eighth league goal of the season opened the scoring, and the Polish striker expressed the significance of the moment.
“Today was special, not just for me but for everyone,” he told reporters. “I’m thrilled to have scored the first goal upon our return to Camp Nou.
“I’ve played in many stadiums, but this one is unique. I’m proud of both my performance and the team’s effort in securing the win.
“This first goal will be a memory I’ll cherish forever.”
Although Barça had a decent run at the Olympic Stadium last season, winning the league there, the location and the surrounding running track affected the atmosphere and attendance.
“I sensed something special was brewing coming back from the national team a few days ago,” Lewandowski added. “Everyone knew this match would be memorable. We executed well, and I’m grateful for the team’s performance today.”
Flick praised Lewandowski, whose contract is set to expire next summer as he approaches 38.
“He has a remarkable scoring record,” Flick remarked. “When he gets a chance, his conversion rate is incredibly high. Scoring early in the game was crucial for our confidence.”
“In my view, he’s been the best No. 9 over the last decade. Age is irrelevant; he remains fit and hungry for goals.”
In further positive news, Raphinha returned from a two-month injury layoff as a second-half substitute, and García’s clean sheet in his first appearance in two months marked Barça’s first since September.
Next, Barça will shift their focus to the Champions League, facing Chelsea on Tuesday. Frenkie de Jong will return from suspension, and Pedri aims to be fit again following a hamstring injury.
