Kylian Mbappé emphasized the need for Real Madrid players to “support” Xabi Alonso following their dramatic 4-3 victory in the Champions League against Olympiacos on Wednesday.
Midfielder Eduardo Camavinga echoed this sentiment, stressing the need to “assist” the coach.
Alonso faced scrutiny after three consecutive games without a win, raising concerns about his rapport with key players, including Vinícius Júnior, who has spent significant time on the bench this season.
Despite these challenges, Mbappé, who netted four goals in the match—including an impressive seven-minute hat trick—claimed that the team and coaching staff remain “united.” Vinícius also showed his support for Alonso by embracing him during the post-match celebrations at the Karaiskakis Stadium.
“I understand that there’s a lot of external noise,” Mbappé stated. “It’s typical for people to talk when you’re at Real Madrid. We must support the players, the coach, and the staff because, ultimately, we’re all in this together.”
Prior to the match against Olympiacos, Madrid had suffered a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, alongside draws of 0-0 against Rayo Vallecano and 2-2 with Elche in La Liga, during which Mbappé was unable to score.
“It was crucial for us to get back to winning ways,” Mbappé remarked. “We are aware that going three games without a victory is significant for a team like ours. There’s room for improvement, of course… While we don’t oppose the external commentary, we are united, and I believe the fans are backing us.”
Camavinga also voiced his backing for Alonso, asserting, “We will do everything in our power to support our coach. Winning is the first step. The past few matches have indeed been challenging as we haven’t achieved victories. We need to concentrate on our mentality and press forward.”
With this victory, Madrid stands at 12 points and occupies fifth place in the Champions League table, looking ahead to their match against Manchester City on December 10.
“We’re pleased,” midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni expressed. “Securing this win was essential, especially if we aspire to finish in the top eight. We need to maintain this momentum; while things won’t be perfect, it’s better to leave with three additional points.”
