Germany Stumbles Against…

Germany and Spain played to a 0-0 stalemate in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Nations League final at Fritz Walter Stadion on Friday evening.

On a chilly night in Kaiserslautern, both teams struck the woodwork, but Germany had the upper hand in terms of opportunities, forcing Spanish goalkeeper Cata Coll to make six crucial saves.

Despite their attacking efforts, the home side failed to score, which they might regret when the teams face off again in the second leg at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid on Tuesday.

In a rematch of last summer’s Euro 2025 semifinal, where Spain emerged victorious 1-0 in extra time, Germany controlled the first half but couldn’t convert their dominance into goals, much to the disappointment of their enthusiastic home supporters.

Klara Bühl had an early shot saved by Coll, who then made a remarkable foot save to deny defender Franziska Kett.

Spain’s captain Irene Paredes was also pivotal, clearing a ball off the line after Coll had been beaten by Jule Brand.

Germany continued to press and create chances, with Coll making another impressive save to keep the score level at halftime.

Under the leadership of Sonia Bermúdez, the reigning world champions improved after the break, with Alexia Putellas narrowly missing a chance and Esther González hitting the post, although Germany quickly regained control.

The energetic Bühl had two attempts blocked, while Sjoeke Nüsken headed over from a corner when unchallenged, and Bühl then struck the woodwork as the final minutes approached.

Germany sought a late winner as four minutes of stoppage time were added, with Shekiera Martinez sending a long-range attempt wide while Coll was off her line.

Meanwhile, Spain seemed satisfied with the draw, setting the stage for an exciting second leg back in Madrid next week.

La Roja are looking to secure the trophy for the second consecutive time, having claimed the inaugural Nations League title in 2024, while Germany aspires to expand their impressive tally of 11 major titles, the last of which was won during the 2016 Olympics.
