Erling Haaland will have to hold off for a few more days before he can join the Premier League 100 club. He was unable to find the back of the net during Manchester City’s thrilling 3-2 win against Leeds United on Saturday.
The Norwegian forward is vying to surpass Alan Shearer’s long-standing record for the quickest player to reach 100 goals. Haaland sits just one goal shy of the landmark after 110 matches, whereas Shearer achieved the feat in 124 games back in 1995.
It would have been fitting for Haaland to score his 100th goal against Leeds—his birthplace—during his father Ale Inge Haaland’s three-year tenure with the Yorkshire club.
While Haaland still has ample opportunity to break Shearer’s record, he has a way to go to claim the all-time scoring title: Shearer remains the Premier League’s highest scorer with 260 goals.
