Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmatí will be sidelined for five months following surgery on a broken leg, as confirmed by the Catalan club.
The 27-year-old Bonmatí suffered a fractured fibula during a training session with Spain over the weekend and promptly returned to Barcelona to begin her recovery.
“Bonmatí has successfully undergone surgery for a fractured fibula in her left leg,” Barça stated in an announcement on Tuesday.
The procedure, supervised by the club’s medical team, was carried out by Dr. Antoni Dalmau at Hospital Barcelona. The anticipated recovery duration is approximately five months.
Bonmatí sustained the injury on Sunday while preparing for Tuesday’s UEFA Women’s Nations League final second leg against Germany.

Although Bonmatí initially wished to remain with her teammates to support their efforts to defend the trophy, she was recommended to return to Barcelona for treatment.
She had played in the first leg in Germany, which concluded in a goalless tie.
Bonmatí’s absence will significantly impact Barça’s midfield options for much of the remaining season, though there is a possibility she could return as the campaign culminates.
If Barcelona reaches the Champions League final, it is scheduled to take place in Oslo on May 22, with the final round of Liga F matches set for the following week.
Bonmatí’s injury complicates Barça’s midfield dynamics, especially in the short term, as both Patri Guijarro and Kika Nazareth are also unlikely to play again this year due to injuries.
Meanwhile, Laia Aleixandri is expected to step up from defense alongside Alexia Putellas, with young talents like Vicky López, Sydney Schertenleib, and Clara Serrajordi in contention for the remaining midfield roles.
