Alonso Praises Mbappés…

Xabi Alonso commended Kylian Mbappé for his “two fantastic goals” and strong connection with Vinícius Júnior following Real Madrid‘s impressive 3-0 victory over Athletic Club on Wednesday.

Mbappé opened the scoring in the seventh minute at San Mamés, assisted Eduardo Camavinga, and later secured his second goal an hour into the match, marking Madrid’s first LaLiga win since November 1.

The victory positioned Madrid with 36 points from 15 matches, just one point shy of league leaders Barcelona at the top of the LaLiga standings.

“Kylian is in excellent form,” Alonso remarked in his post-game press conference. “Today, he netted two remarkable goals, and his connection with Vini was outstanding.

“The team started strong, aiming to win with focus, intensity, and a great rhythm. We controlled the first half effectively. Although we had less possession in the second half, we kept control. This win was crucial after three consecutive away draws, and it feels great to return to winning on the road.”

Alonso faced pressure leading into the Bilbao match, as the team’s recent performance had seen them draw against Rayo Vallecano, Elche, and Girona.

“This was a significant match,” Alonso emphasized. “We aimed to change the course of our recent form, but approached it with the necessary calm and preparation. I believe the team delivered a thoroughly complete performance. We maintained focus throughout the 90 minutes, conceding very little. It was likely our most complete display in a challenging stadium at a crucial moment.”

Mbappé’s two goals brought his tally to 55 in 2025, as he nears Cristiano Ronaldo‘s club record of 59 goals in a calendar year.

“This is my Madrid,” the star shared on social media post-match.

Alonso declined to speculate on the improvements shown against Athletic, contrasting with previous weeks. “Today is today, and that’s what matters most,” he stated. “The team’s performance, the collective quality on display, and our game control were impressive. That’s what I take from this match.”

“We’re focused on taking it one game at a time. The demanding schedule doesn’t allow for much reflection, whether in the good or tough times.”
