Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has cautioned that further squad rotation may be necessary following his team’s 3-1 defeat to Leeds on Wednesday.
The loss at Elland Road followed five changes made by Maresca, which seemed to disrupt the attacking fluidity and defensive stability that had characterized strong performances against Barcelona and Arsenal.
Reece James was among those omitted from the starting lineup, having carefully managed his playing time since recovering from a significant injury. Notably, Malo Gusto, Wesley Fofana, and Pedro Neto, who have shown excellent form this season, were also left out.
In midfield, Moisés Caicedo was unavailable as he began a three-match suspension following his red card against Arsenal.
Maresca has been frequently questioned regarding the number of changes made to his starting XI.
Against Leeds, the team displayed a concerning decline in performance, particularly in the absence of their two most influential players this season, James and Caicedo, while those who started struggled physically against a robust opposition.
“We have players that we need to manage due to their histories,” Maresca stated. “Wes, Reece, Pedro, and Romeo [Lavia]. We need to protect four or five players. I would love to field Reece, Pedro, and Moi in every game, but that’s just not feasible. We strive to find alternative solutions.”
“When we drop points, experience is often cited. But after our wins against Barcelona and draws with Arsenal, no one mentioned the need for experienced players,” he added.
“Our failure to secure a win against Leeds wasn’t due to a lack of experience; rather, we simply weren’t up to the required standard.”
“We have experienced players, but unfortunately, they were not available. One was suspended and another was injured. The more experienced players were absent.”
The squad was scheduled to travel to Bournemouth on Friday afternoon, just around 24 hours after returning from Leeds.
With such a tight turnaround, none of the players who featured in Wednesday’s match will have had time to train ahead of the game at the Vitality Stadium.
Maresca highlighted the physical demands on his squad due to a congested schedule, which will see Chelsea play 11 matches across all competitions from November 22 to December 30. This will likely necessitate further rotation, despite the squad’s depth being offset by a lack of experience.
Disciplinary issues are also impacting the team — Caicedo’s red card against Arsenal marked the sixth dismissal of the season.

Maresca reflected, “We probably paid the price for having to play with 10 men for an hour against Arsenal. Leeds posed a different challenge, one we weren’t fully prepared for,” he noted. “Most of our rotation is due to the fact that some players are unable to play every three days.”
“It’s a common pattern—when our chosen 11 wins, everything is fine, but when we lose, that’s cited as the excuse,” he said. “Playing with 10 players for an hour followed by a tough game at Leeds isn’t ideal for us.”
