Cardiff City’s legal battle against Nantes regarding the death of Emiliano Sala is set to take place in a French court on Monday.

The Welsh club is pursuing a negligence claim seeking over £100 million ($133.4 million) in damages from the French team, which includes the £15 million transfer fee for the Argentinian striker, as well as losses from potential earnings.

Sala, 28, tragically died in January 2019 when the light aircraft he was aboard, en route to join Cardiff City following the completion of the transfer, crashed into the English Channel.

Cardiff asserts that Nantes is liable for the incident, claiming the flight was arranged by the agent hired by the French club.

The hearing was initially scheduled for September but was postponed to December due to a request from Nantes.

A statement from Cardiff issued on Sunday read: “Tomorrow, Nantes’ commercial court will finally examine the core of Cardiff City Football Club’s case against FC Nantes.”

“This hearing represents another step towards uncovering the truth and ensuring greater accountability in football.”

Currently in League One, Cardiff was a Premier League club at the time of this unfortunate incident.

The Press Association has reached out to FC Nantes for a comment.
