Silva: I was the first…

David Silva, the former midfielder for Spain, has disclosed that he declined an opportunity to join Inter Miami after departing from Manchester City in 2020.

Following ten successful seasons at the Etihad Stadium, Silva was lured by the idea of playing in MLS, but ultimately chose to return to La Liga with Real Sociedad, where he retired in 2023 after an ACL injury.

“I was the first to get offers from Inter Miami,” Silva, now 39, shared during his appearance on the El Camino de Mario podcast.

Silva recounted his meeting with Inter Miami president David Beckham in Manchester, during which he expressed his desire to continue competing in Europe. “I received many other offers afterward: Japan, Qatar… but I eventually decided to prioritize my personal life and felt ready to compete,” he explained.

A winner of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and a two-time European champion in 2008 and 2012 with Spain, Silva reflects fondly on his time in England.

When asked if he would have liked to play for Barcelona, the former Valencia player replied, “Who wouldn’t want to? But honestly, the best decision I made was joining City.”

“My ten years there were incredible. The fans treated me amazingly, we achieved everything possible, and the team continued to grow. And then there’s just something unique about football in England.”

“I can’t quite explain it, but it’s almost like a religion for them. Adjusting took time because I didn’t have the opportunity to train after the World Cup and during the holidays,” he admitted.

“I observed their play and thought, ‘I either need to get fit or I’m done.’ I communicated with the manager about my readiness, and gradually he eased me into the team.”

Silva scored 77 goals in 436 appearances for City, claiming four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and five League Cups during his illustrious career at the Etihad.
