Maresca reacts to worst…

Enzo Maresca described the last 48 hours as his “worst” since taking over at Chelsea, despite his team’s 2-0 victory over Everton, which lifted them to fourth place in the Premier League.

The win at Stamford Bridge broke a four-match winless streak; however, after the game, the Italian coach expressed frustration over a lack of support from unidentified individuals, clarifying that his comments were not directed at the fans.

Cole Palmer found the net in his first home start since August, eliciting a positive atmosphere in the stadium. Nevertheless, Maresca remained visibly displeased, despite the much-needed victory alleviating some pressure on him.

Chelsea ratings: Palmer, Neto, Gusto 8/10 in Everton win

“The last 48 hours have been the toughest since I joined the club because many people didn’t back me and the team,” he stated. “In general.”

When asked if he was referring to the club’s supporters, he reassured, “I love the fans and we are very happy with their support.”

Maresca’s comments came in response to a question about Malo Gusto, who netted Chelsea’s second goal, leading him to express his concerns.

On Friday, he had remarked that only victories would quell fan complaints on social media, reflecting on his three-decade career in football and acknowledging, “I know that if you don’t win, everyone complains.”

It was unclear if his post-match comments regarding Everton were aimed at online responses or something else entirely, but he quickly praised his players for breaking a poor streak that featured defeats against Leeds and Atalanta and a disappointing goalless draw at Bournemouth.

“The players gave an immense effort—Reece [James] and Malo both played as full-backs yet performed like midfielders today,” he noted.

“Their commitment, open-mindedness, and eagerness to learn have been exceptional. That’s why I commend them. Despite numerous challenges, they’ve done remarkably well following a tough week.”

Palmer’s goal, which was his first at home from open play since January, was a highlight of the match. The young player has faced a challenging year with two significant injuries, limiting his impact compared to his strong start at Chelsea.

Wesley Fofana assisted with a short ball to Gusto, who accurately passed it through the Everton defense. Palmer took advantage of the situation, slicing through the center and firing the ball past Jordan Pickford at his near post.

“With Cole, we are a stronger team,” Maresca remarked. “I truly admire my players because we’ve played 16 Premier League matches, with five without Moisés Caicedo, 11 without Cole Palmer, and nearly all without Liam Delap. Regardless of who takes the field, they are performing excellently.”

“We have played almost the entire season without our best player. That’s why I feel so proud of my team’s efforts, and I wish those outside the club would recognize that.”
