Greenwood Nets in Ligue 1…

Mason Greenwood clinched a last-minute goal to help Marseille secure a vital 1-0 win over Monaco on Sunday, reclaiming third place in Ligue 1.

The former Manchester United striker made the decisive strike, marking his 14th goal of the season and 11th in Ligue 1, with just eight minutes left at the Stade Velodrome.

This came just after Folarin Balogun had a goal disallowed for offside after a VAR review.

Greenwood found the back of the net with a first-time shot from inside the box, set up by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

He received a yellow card for removing his shirt during his celebration, but Marseille held on to the win that keeps them five points behind league leaders Lens.

Although Marseille may feel they deserved the win based on overall play, Monaco certainly matched them in offensive chances.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Timothy Weah tested Monaco’s goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky with early shots, while Aleksandr Golovin and Takumi Minamino created chances for Monaco.

Greenwood missed a couple of opportunities, while Minamino had additional looks for Monaco before Igor Paixão forced another save from Hradecky.

Hradecky denied Greenwood’s attempts twice, and just as it seemed Marseille would regret missed chances, Balogun’s goal was ruled out 10 minutes before full time.

Having scored twice against Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League earlier in the week, Greenwood capitalized on his next chance to put Marseille ahead late in the match.

In the final moments, George Ilenikhena was unable to equalize for Monaco as his shot was saved by Gerónimo Rulli.
