Fernandes: Portugal Not…

Bruno Fernandes defended Cristiano Ronaldo, stating that the star still offers significant value to the national team, countering suggestions that Portugal performs better without him.

When Ronaldo was sidelined due to suspension, Portugal achieved a resounding 9-1 victory over Armenia in last month’s final World Cup qualifier, securing their spot in next year’s tournament.

“Cristiano remains a top-tier player in the box,” said Fernandes, who captains Manchester United, during an interview with Canal 11.

“He attracts defenders and opens up spaces for others. If Cristiano is not on the field and [Paris Saint-Germain‘s] Gonçalo [Ramos] plays, Gonçalo excels in pressing and makes effective diagonal runs.

“When I’m on the sidelines and Bernardo [Silva] steps in as a number 10, Bernardo enhances our possession, while I focus on key passes. Each player brings strengths and areas of improvement. Cristiano is no different. We need to adapt and maximize each other’s talents for the benefit of the national team.”

At 40, Ronaldo stands as the all-time leading men’s international goalscorer, accumulating 143 goals in 226 appearances since his debut for Portugal in 2003.

His international career faced uncertainty when he was benched by Fernando Santos during the 2022 World Cup.

However, his impressive form playing for Saudi Pro League team Al Nassr has led to his re-integration into Portugal’s starting line-up under the new coach, Roberto Martínez.

“I know the perception that we are more fluid without Ronaldo, that players have more freedom,” Fernandes remarked. “If that’s the case, it’s partly our responsibility. We shouldn’t be concerned about Cristiano being on the pitch because he brings valuable skills.”

Portugal, who triumphed over Euro 2024 champions Spain to claim the UEFA Nations League title last summer, enter the 2026 World Cup with high aspirations.

They secured qualification with four victories and only one loss, netting 20 goals—five scored by their top scorer Ronaldo—and conceding seven in six matches.

“I want to participate in the 2026 World Cup, but if being on the bench means we can become champions, I would gladly accept that,” said Fernandes.

At 31, Fernandes is also looking forward to his third World Cup experience.

This tournament will provide Ronaldo with his final chance to capture the only major trophy currently absent from his illustrious career.

“Our aspiration is to win the World Cup, and that responsibility is a positive force,” Fernandes added. “We must unite and identify areas for improvement, recognizing that the World Cup journey won’t be flawless. I’m confident we are well-prepared to undertake a remarkable campaign that honors our country.”
