Which of These 8 Midfield…

The search for an ideal partner for Manchester United‘s Bruno Fernandes in midfield remains unresolved. As Manuel Ugarte struggles to find his place in the squad, Kobbie Mainoo is out of favor, and the injury-plagued Casemiro turns 33 soon, the urgency for a new centerpiece in Ruben Amorim’s midfield becomes ever more critical.

Recent remarks from Fernandes about a potential future transfer imply that United may need to fill two midfield roles in the near term. Consequently, the club has been linked with numerous players lately. Sources indicated to ESPN’s Rob Dawson in November that at least seven midfielders are under consideration, exhibiting a range of profiles from pure distributors and connective passers to ball-winners, box-to-box No. 8s, and attacking creators.

Here, we evaluate how each candidate could fit into what is arguably the most demanding role in United’s 3-4-2-1 formation.

Adam Wharton

Age: 21
Team: Crystal Palace
Market value: £55 million

At just 18 months into his career, Wharton is already one of the Premier League’s top ball distributors. He’s constantly seeking the ball and is reliable under pressure, making fast, strategic passes, including 35-yard switches, incisive line-breaking passes, and well-weighted deliveries.

His exceptional left foot, combined with his vision and ability to read the play, allows for quick and seamless ball movement. Wharton thrives in a high-intensity environment, showcasing his skills in Oliver Glasner’s energetic system at Palace. His key-pass output has risen approximately 10% this season, whilst maintaining accuracy and variation in his passing.

Although Wharton may be more of a creative force than an all-rounder who complements Fernandes naturally, his passing ability makes him a top prospect for United. His calm demeanor and decision-making are traits that big clubs often build around, but with a contract running until 2029, a fee around £100 million may be necessary.

Elliot Anderson

Age: 23
Team: Nottingham Forest
Market value: £55 million

Since transitioning from Newcastle United to Nottingham Forest for about £35 million in July 2024, Anderson has excelled as a box-to-box No. 8 and as a deeper midfielder. He effectively knits play together, dictates tempo, defends diligently, and creates opportunities without disrupting momentum.

He combines skill with an ability to carry the ball forward, averaging over eight progressive passes per 90 minutes with a 75% completion rate while maintaining defensive efforts (eight defensive duels per 90 and over four interceptions). In Amorim’s midfield setup, his skill set makes him a perfect fit, capable of pressing, covering, and connecting play without throwing off balance.

Carlos Baleba

Age: 21
Team: Brighton & Hove Albion
Market value: £55 million

A recognized performer in the Premier League, Baleba’s potential value is reflected in Brighton’s desire to fetch over £100 million for him. While primarily known as a defensive midfielder, the Cameroon international leverages tactical awareness and discipline rather than just disruption. He demonstrates an ability to read play, track opponents, and fill gaps consistently.

Baleba could serve as a similar figure to Casemiro, though lacking the Brazilian’s knack for late attacking runs. His passing stats are modest, averaging 35 passes per 90 minutes, but that is typical for a player of his style, focusing on safeguarding rather than creativity. His increased defensive output, nearing eight duels per 90, signifies growth in his role.

An often overlooked aspect of Baleba’s game is his aerial prowess; despite standing at 5-foot-10, he wins a notable 58% of aerial duels, showcasing his timing and balance. If United seeks a stabilizing presence to pair with a creative midfielder, Baleba is a strong contender.

Angelo Stiller

Age: 24
Team: VfB Stuttgart
Market value: £40 million

The left-footed Germany international stands out as one of the Bundesliga’s finest deep-lying playmakers. Averaging around 67 passes per 90 minutes highlights not just the quantity, but the quality of his distribution. With 10-11 progressive passes per 90 at an impressive 80% accuracy, he facilitates Stuttgart’s rhythm through well-timed, strategic ball circulation.

While Stiller’s playmaking flourishes in combination with an energetic ball-winner, his statistics reveal he struggles in defensive duels, averaging only 3.8 per 90. Thus, to fully benefit from his talents, a robust partner would be essential. Although he offers controlled ball progression and balance, mobility is a potential concern playing alongside him.

Conor Gallagher

Age: 25
Team: Atlético Madrid
Market value: £30 million

If United decides to make a single midfield signing, Gallagher feels more like a “nice-to-have” addition rather than a “must-have” one. While he boasts valuable experience and excellent attacking prowess at 25 years old, he may not precisely meet Amorim’s pressing needs.

There’s no clear position for him in a role as a roaming No. 8 or No. 10 (even with two such roles in Amorim’s system). Using him as the runner beside Fernandes may work, but it could destabilize the team defensively while hindering his best contributions around the goal.

Gallagher’s limited La Liga appearances during this season suggest a move may be on the horizon, but United doesn’t seem like the right fit for him at this time.

André & João Gomes

Age: Both 24
Team: Wolverhampton Wanderers
Market value: £25 million (André); £35 million (Gomes)

While it may raise eyebrows for two players from a struggling team being linked to United, André and Gomes each present enticing qualities.

André focuses on maintaining team structure and often plays near the center backs, showing strong positional awareness and reliability under pressure. His game is characterized more by angles and vision than outright dynamism, making him a pivotal stabilizing presence in midfield.

Conversely, Gomes injects energy and engages in duels more frequently (9.7 vs. 6.7 per 90 minutes) at higher locations on the pitch. He effectively chases lost possession and turns it into forward play, which suits a more stretched game environment—though he may lack the ability to control tempo.

In summary, André adds stability while Gomes brings intensity. For United, André could provide a reliable point of reference, while Gomes would elevate pressing. Ideally, a player who combines the strengths of both would be the ultimate signing.

Alex Scott

Age: 22
Club: Bournemouth
Market value: £30 million

While Scott emerges as an exciting prospect, it’s hard to see him arriving at Old Trafford as the answer to every problem in January. His technical strength, ability to navigate tight situations, and a positive mindset make him an interesting target.

Scott tends to excel as a “receive and connect” midfielder rather than a possession-heavy playmaker. Though he showcases solid progressive carrying (1.95 per 90) and take-ons (0.92 per 90), his tackling stats indicate he is still developing defensively. Nevertheless, his defensive work is improving, and his willingness to take responsibility is commendable.

Scott’s defensive metrics are decent but not extraordinary, and his passing leans more toward functionality than domination. He may attract attention from larger clubs in the future, but the rumors about an imminent move to United could be premature, as Amorim has other better options available. Reports linking his Bournemouth teammate and US star Tyler Adams also emerged before he suffered a recent knee injury that will sideline him for an extended period.
