Manchester United‘s head coach, Ruben Amorim, emphasized that Kobbie Mainoo embodies the club’s future, although he will need to be patient for his opportunity to shine.
The 20-year-old midfielder has struggled to gain a foothold at Old Trafford, having logged only one start in the Carabao Cup amidst a total of 12 appearances this term.
Recently, Amorim noted that Mainoo must “fight for his job.” However, a calf injury sustained in training prior to Sunday’s match against Aston Villa has sidelined him at a time when the squad is already without seven other players.
Despite this, the United manager seems to be adopting a long-term perspective regarding Mainoo, despite his limited playing time this season.
“Kobbie Mainoo will always have his opportunity. He can play in various positions: whether as a defensive midfielder, in a three-man midfield setup, or in the role we utilized recently similar to Mason Mount‘s position as a number 10 who drops back into midfield,” Amorim explained.
“I genuinely believe he will be a key player for Manchester United in the future. He just has to bide his time, as everything can change in football quite rapidly.”
While Amorim downplayed the likelihood of Mainoo going out on loan in January—an option further reduced by his injury—he also indicated that finding a suitable replacement would be necessary.
“If we can’t bring someone in, it would be difficult to let him go,” Amorim stated.
“Even with a full squad, we are somewhat short on players for potential scenarios, so it would be challenging for anyone to exit the club unless we secure a substitution.”
Midfield appears to be an area that requires reinforcement, particularly with the transfer window approaching and the contracts of players like Casemiro and center-back Harry Maguire expiring this summer (though there is a 12-month option for the Brazilian).
“There’s no decision regarding their contracts yet,” Amorim clarified.

“We have many tasks ahead and must consider the next season, particularly in terms of European competitions and our strategic direction.
“There’s much to address at the moment. We’re not currently fixated on that. I’m pleased with my players, but the future remains uncertain.”
Amorim assured that he would not be disappointed if transfer reinforcements did not materialize next month.
“No, while we are facing challenges right now, we have a comprehensive plan in place,” he stated in anticipation of the match against Newcastle.
“We will stay committed to this plan. If we find the right player who we believe is integral to the club’s future, we will sign him.
“If that doesn’t happen, we have options like Jack [Fletcher], Shea Lacey, and soon we will also welcome back Amad, Nous [Mazraoui], Bryan [Mbeumo], and Bruno [Fernandes]. Additionally, Kobbie Mainoo will return. We will see how things develop.”
