Enzo Maresca, the head coach of Chelsea, expressed his pride in his team’s representation of his character, despite their ongoing disciplinary challenges.
This season, Chelsea has received seven red cards, including one to Maresca himself, who faces his second touchline suspension during Saturday’s match against Aston Villa due to a series of yellow cards.
Notable dismissals have included Trevoh Chalobah and Robert Sánchez, whose red cards against Brighton and Manchester United proved costly. Additionally, players such as Malo Gusto, João Pedro, and Liam Delap have also faced suspensions.
Moises Caicedo’s three-match ban, which resulted from his red card against Arsenal in November, coincided with a noticeable downturn in Chelsea’s performance, as they were without one of their standout players.
The team’s disciplinary troubles continued during Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle, where Sánchez received a yellow card just seven minutes in for vocally contesting a decision, while Maresca received his third yellow card of the season, resulting in his suspension.
The Italian coach has remained dedicated to supporting his players amid a challenging month.
“This morning the club showed me a media comment suggesting the team reflects the manager,” Maresca stated. “I take pride in that, especially with a squad that is the youngest in the Premier League. We need to give them room for mistakes as part of their development.”
“While we are seeing yellow and red cards, I prefer to analyze the different situations,” he added.
In contrast, Aston Villa has shown remarkable consistency, winning 11 of their last 12 league matches and achieving 10 consecutive victories across all competitions to rise to third place in the standings following a shaky start.
Unai Emery’s team went without a win in their first five league games, only managing to score their first goal in the 67th minute of their fifth match against Sunderland, but has since experienced a remarkable turnaround.
By contrast, Maresca’s Chelsea has struggled with inconsistency, showcasing impressive performances against teams like Liverpool and Barcelona, while suffering defeats to Sunderland at home and collapsing against Leeds.
“Consistency is one of our next goals,” Maresca acknowledged. “Winning ten in a row in the Premier League is incredibly challenging.”

Maresca shared that he enjoys a strong relationship with captain Reece James, highlighted by a memorable Christmas gift from his skipper.
“I received a fantastic bottle of wine from Reece on Tuesday,” he revealed.
However, James still has a way to go to reach the status of Maresca’s all-time favorite player from his managerial career.
“I genuinely believe that Jamie Vardy is one of the top strikers in England,” Maresca said, recalling his time managing Vardy at Leicester. “He’s an exceptional player and a great person with a big heart.”
