RABAT, Morocco — Captain of Morocco, Achraf Hakimi, has urged local fans to cease whistling at the team during the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
“It’s unusual for supporters to whistle,” Hakimi stated on Sunday ahead of Morocco’s final group match against Zambia scheduled for Monday. “We require our 12th man.”
The Moroccan squad faced whistles from home fans during halftime and again at the conclusion of their disappointing 1-1 draw against Mali on Friday.
“We require the support of our fans,” Hakimi emphasized. “However, we must respect our competitors, as they are no easy challenge.”
Ranked No. 11, Morocco is acknowledged as the top African team and is a strong contender in the 35th edition of the tournament after reaching the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup. The Atlas Lions are set to compete in all their group matches at the nearly 70,000-capacity Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, the capital, where they are also expected to play their first knockout game if they top their group.
“We are aware that the fans expect us to win each match. Since the World Cup, there’s been a transformation in Morocco, but we must remain grounded. Hosting AFCON provides an advantage, but it doesn’t simplify our challenge. We need their support. Regarding criticisms aimed at our coach, he has done an excellent job. He was integral to our World Cup journey, and he has altered mentalities, including my own.”
Currently leading Group A with four points from two matches, Morocco is followed by Mali and Zambia, both on two points, with Comoros trailing on one point. Their final group match against Mali is also scheduled for Monday.
The top two teams from each group, along with the best third-place teams, will advance.
Hakimi drew upon his experiences with club Paris Saint-Germain, where the players faced similar treatment before the team went on to win the Champions League in May. “People said we weren’t a great team. In the end, we became European champions. That’s how it goes,” Hakimi said.
Morocco’s coach, Walid Regragui, confirmed that Hakimi will make his tournament debut against Zambia, either starting or coming off the bench, having recovered from an ankle injury he sustained while with PSG on Nov. 4.
“He’s the best player in Africa,” Regragui remarked about Hakimi.
