Maresca Faces Criticism…

Newcastle secured their second away victory of the Premier League season with a 3-1 win against Burnley at Turf Moor, thanks to early goals from Joelinton and Yoane Wissa.

Joelinton opened the scoring just 65 seconds into the match, marking his first Premier League goal in a year. Six minutes later, Wissa made his mark with his maiden league goal for the Magpies in his first start.

Burnley’s Josh Laurent pulled one back for the hosts in the 23rd minute, but despite several chances in the second half, they couldn’t equalize. Bruno Guimarães sealed the victory for Newcastle in stoppage time, leaving Burnley without a win in their last ten matches and six points from safety.

The win marked Newcastle’s first away victory since their 4-1 win against Everton on November 29, though it wasn’t a flawless performance as Burnley controlled much of the second half before conceding a late goal.

Burnley’s lackluster start forced them to adopt a more aggressive approach. Joelinton scored after slipping in front of Hjalmar Ekdal to finish a low cross from Anthony Gordon.

The second goal was a scrappy affair. After an interception, Joelinton seized the ball from Maxime Estève, and though Wissa’s initial attempt was blocked, he scored on the rebound despite Burnley’s protests over a foul.

Burnley’s troubles worsened when Esteve, returning from injury, limped off after just 13 minutes.

With Burnley struggling to find the target this season, the match seemed almost out of reach for them. However, Newcastle’s record of dropping points from winning positions kept the door open for a comeback.

After a blocked shot from Lucas Pires, his cross was headed on by Armando Broja, allowing Laurent to score past Nick Pope, who was making a return against his former club.

Newcastle missed several opportunities to re-establish their lead, with Wissa failing to score from an unmarked position, and a subsequent shot from him was denied by a tight angle. Barnes also had a chance thwarted by Martin Dúbravka.

The first half concluded with Marcus Edwards having a shot cleared off the line, setting the tone for a second half more dominated by Burnley.

A quick counterattack led to a shot from Loum Tchaouna that went directly at Pope, followed by a clearance of Laurent’s header that bounced back off the crossbar.

Despite Newcastle’s limited attempts forward, Malick Thiaw had a header cleared off the line from a corner. Shortly after, substitute Jacob Murphy squandered a chance by shooting over the bar.

The third goal came from a mistake between Ekdal and Dúbravka, allowing Guimarães to score from outside the box.
