Flick: Barça must acquire…

Barcelona’s head coach Hansi Flick emphasized the necessity of signing a defender in January to enhance their prospects this season. The team has allowed 20 goals in 18 LaLiga matches—more than any other squad in the top seven—and has also conceded 11 goals in their six Champions League games.

In a recent press conference, Flick acknowledged the need for reinforcements, particularly in the full-back and centre-back positions. “We’re not in a position to make a signing right now, but it’s clear that we might need an additional player,” he stated when asked about potential new additions this month.

Flick further remarked, “We need to discuss this matter. Acquiring a player of the necessary caliber during the winter window is challenging. I remain optimistic that we can make a move, but it must be a logical one.”

The club’s defensive challenges have worsened since Iñigo Martínez departed for Saudi Arabia last summer, coupled with the absence of Andreas Christensen, who has been sidelined since December due to an ACL injury.

This situation has led Flick to rely on young player Pau Cubarsí and converted left-back Gerard Martín as his main centre-back duo in recent weeks, with Ronald Araújo also unavailable.

Araújo returned to training this week after taking a mental health break in November; however, it remains uncertain when he will be fit for selection as Barça gears up for Saturday’s derby against Espanyol.

“It’s his choice,” reflected Flick on Araújo’s readiness. “He’s doing well now; although not at 100% physically, he is on the right path. He will determine his own pace.”

“I’ve witnessed great support from his teammates, which has been amazing. He had the time he needed, and that’s what we could do for him.”

Players like Pedri and Dani Olmo are set to return for the match against Espanyol after missing the victory over Villarreal before the winter break. Additionally, Flick confirmed that Lamine Yamal is fit to play following a bout of flu.

The upcoming derby carries added intensity as it will be the first time Barça goalkeeper Joan García faces Espanyol since transferring across the city in a €25 million deal last summer.

Flick expressed confidence that García would manage any anticipated hostility from the crowd, urging supporters to channel their energy into supporting their teams. “From my perspective, I don’t believe Joan will be affected. He’s always focused and has performed remarkably well during his time here, validating our decision to sign him,” Flick remarked.

“Ultimately, the most important aspect of football is to rally behind your own team, rather than oppose others. This positivity is essential for the players and can lead to enhanced performance.

“I believe everyone seeks to create positive energy for the players. The focus should remain on supporting your team, not concentrating on the opposition.”

This Saturday’s derby at RCDE Stadium features two of LaLiga’s most formidable sides. Barça enters the match riding an eight-game winning streak and leads the table by four points, while fifth-placed Espanyol is also on a five-match winning spree.
