LONDON, England — The anticipated clash between Manchester United and Arsenal ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw, underscoring the challenges both teams face in their pursuit of the Women’s Super League (WSL) title this season, and suggesting a lack of competitiveness at the top of the table.
Last season, Chelsea established dominance early on, finishing a remarkable 12 points ahead of Arsenal to win the title with weeks to spare.
This time, City looks poised to claim their first title in ten years, capitalizing on the underwhelming performances of Arsenal and United. If City secures a victory against Everton on Sunday, they could extend their lead over both competitors to ten points.

So far this season, neither Arsenal nor United have achieved a victory against any of the top four teams, managing only three points out of a possible twelve. They both suffered defeats against City and were held to draws by Chelsea. The matches between Arsenal and United this season have produced uninspiring 0-0 results, shedding light on their struggles to challenge Chelsea for the WSL trophy.
“We have made it harder for ourselves [to win the league] with this result. We needed three points today,” Arsenal manager Renee Slegers said, acknowledging the importance of winning against top-four teams, particularly at home.
Despite Arsenal having a slight edge in creating chances, they only managed to hit the target six times out of their 25 attempts, all of which were comfortably dealt with by United’s goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce.
The lack of tactical flexibility has become apparent, as teams have learned to counter Arsenal’s predictable style of play. The club has recognized poor resilience as a significant hurdle to their domestic aspirations, and despite the support for Slegers with a contract extension, turning the season around seems increasingly unlikely for the young coach.
On the other hand, United struggles with decisiveness in front of goal. Their only clear opportunity came early in the match when Fridolina Rolfö had a header saved in spectacular fashion by second-string goalkeeper Anneka Borbe. After that, United hardly threatened offensively and ended the game without any shots on target.
United’s cautious approach culminated in only four chances created throughout the match, and things worsened after right-back Jayde Riviere was shown a red card.
Dropping to ten players shifted the dynamics of the game. If Arsenal struggled to find their rhythm previously, the last 20 minutes heightened their frustration. Meanwhile, United’s failure to generate any offensive momentum meant they weren’t able to seize the opportunity to claim a win.
This match mirrored their previous encounter in October, a match void of ambition on both sides, ultimately reflecting their hesitance to pursue victory while contenting themselves with a draw. Such strategies are unlikely to yield titles.
As it stands, the race for the title has narrowed into a battle for Champions League qualification, particularly between United and Arsenal, and potentially including Chelsea, contingent on their performance against City.
City enjoys the advantage of being free from European distractions, while Arsenal and United face additional matches in February, including play-offs, as well as Chelsea’s participation in the quarterfinals. Navigating these extra fixtures will place added pressure on the teams, whereas City can concentrate solely on the WSL, giving them a competitive edge.
“We’re not out of it; we will continue to fight,” stated United manager Marc Skinner.
“City is blessed with avoiding any European commitments, which offers them fewer distractions, but a wobble can change everything. We aim to ensure we maximize our opportunities to apply pressure on the standings.”
If City secures a win on Sunday, their lead could expand to ten points over Arsenal and eleven points over United. With only ten matches remaining in the season, it’s hard to envision either team overcoming such a significant gap without assistance from their top-four rivals.
Any hope for an exciting title race rests on Chelsea, who need to create pressure on City, just six points behind, and the pivotal matches they will face against both City and Arsenal in February, which could level the playing field.
