Thomas Frank has accused Ollie Watkins of inciting a confrontation following the final whistle of Tottenham’s 2-1 FA Cup loss to Aston Villa.
Emiliano Buendía and Donyell Malen scored to give Villa a 2-0 lead at halftime, before Wilson Odobert pulled one back with a low shot in the 54th minute.
Although Spurs fought back, they could not avoid elimination in the third round. As Watkins celebrated with Villa fans after the match, he did so near João Palhinha, leading to a scuffle that involved players and staff from both teams. Palhinha then confronted Ezri Konsa as the players exited the field.
Spurs have experienced several incidents at the ends of matches recently. Following their defeat to Bournemouth on Wednesday, multiple players were involved in heated exchanges, and Cristian Romero was serving an additional one-match suspension against Villa due to “acting improperly by failing to leave the field promptly” after his red card in a previous match against Liverpool.
When asked if his players were losing their composure, Frank responded: “Certainly, it’s crucial to maintain a cool head.
“The players poured everything into that match, and losing a closely contested game is tough. The season hasn’t gone perfectly, and I believe Ollie’s celebration was very provocative as he went to acknowledge the Villa fans.
“He could have easily walked around João instead of heading straight for him. For anyone competitive, it’s hard not to let such moments provoke a reaction.”
Villa manager Unai Emery expressed frustration with Palhinha’s early tackle that led to Boubacar Kamara’s ninth-minute substitution due to injury.
“That’s the referee’s responsibility,” he commented.
“I respect both the referees and the competition. Our only frustration was because Boubacar Kamara was injured in that one incident with Palhinha. Overall, the referee did an excellent job today. Some situations arise with certain players, and we can understand that under the circumstances.”

Spurs faced boos from the crowd at halftime, and a more subdued booing followed at the final whistle as pressure mounts on Frank, with Tottenham now eliminated from both domestic cup competitions and sitting 14th in the Premier League.
“It’s certainly disappointing,” Frank admitted.
“We’re all feeling the pain. There’s nothing we want more than to advance to the next round, regardless of the opponent. We played at home and had a real chance.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t make it through. We approached it with our strongest lineup possible. Looking back, we can see that we could have performed better in the first half; the second half was much improved.”
