Kylian Mbappé has expressed his appreciation for Xabi Alonso following the coach’s departure from
Real Madrid, having led the team for less than eight months.
Several Madrid players, including the French star, took to social media to thank the former
Liverpool midfielder after the club announced Alonso’s exit on Monday night, along with the appointment of Álvaro Arbeloa, the coach of the reserves, as his successor.
Mbappé, who participated in 24 matches under Alonso this season, shared a photo of them together on Instagram, writing: “It’s been brief, but an honor to play for you and learn from you. Thank you for trusting me from Day 1.”
“I will remember you as a manager with clear ideas and vast knowledge of football. Wishing you all the best in your next chapter.”
Brazilian forward Rodrygo also expressed his gratitude towards Alonso, saying: “Coach, thank you for every day we shared, for your trust, the lessons, and the memories. I wish you success in your future endeavors. Best wishes always.”
Other players such as Thibaut Courtois, Antonio Rüdiger, and Dani Carvajal also thanked Alonso on social media.
However, players like Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham have yet to respond to Alonso’s departure. Alonso’s relationship with Vinícius had become increasingly tense, particularly after the Brazilian’s angry reaction to being substituted during the
Clásico against Barcelona in October.
Vinícius found himself on the bench multiple times afterward, further straining their rapport.

Although Real Madrid stated that Alonso’s departure was by “mutual agreement,” multiple sources have informed ESPN that it was, in fact, a dismissal.
The reasons cited for this decision included the management of the Vinícius situation, substandard performances, and disappointing results. The announcement came less than a day after Madrid’s 3-2 loss to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia.
Alonso faced scrutiny prior to Christmas, having recorded only two wins in eight matches, which included losses to Liverpool,
Celta Vigo, and
Manchester City. However, the team’s form had improved with five wins leading up to the recent
Clásico defeat.
Currently, Madrid sits four points behind LaLiga leaders Barcelona.
