Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique has expressed his support for a temporary suspension system, similar to a sin-bin, in football, which would see players removed from the pitch for specific fouls.
In rugby, sin-bins are implemented when players commit foul play, resulting in their removal for a duration of 10 minutes. Football currently operates with a system where players either receive a yellow card for minor infractions or are sent off permanently with a red card.
During a pre-match press conference on Thursday, Luis Enrique was asked about the possibility of introducing an “orange” card, which could lead to a player being sidelined for 20 minutes.
“We should keep looking for innovations like this,” he noted ahead of Friday’s Ligue 1 match against Lille.
“It’s vital for the sport to continue evolving. There are always opportunities to improve and create a more captivating brand of football that fans will enjoy.”
He also believes enhancing attacking play could involve creating more space on the field.
“I recall [former UEFA president Michel] Platini suggesting years ago to play with only 10 players instead of 11,” Luis Enrique remarked. “These are concepts worth analyzing to determine their impact on our sport. I’m always open to exploring new ideas.”
As the defending Ligue 1 champions, PSG is currently one point behind surprise leader Lens as they approach this weekend’s matches.
