Carrick Wont Rule Out Long

Michael Carrick has not dismissed the possibility of remaining as Manchester United‘s head coach beyond this season.

He was officially introduced as the head coach of United on Tuesday, tasked with leading the team through the remaining 17 Premier League matches of the current campaign.

The 44-year-old, who briefly served as caretaker in 2021, will make his debut in this new role against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Carrick mentioned that there have been no discussions with club officials regarding a permanent role, but he remains open to the idea.

“I think we are realistic about our current situation, why I’m here, and the responsibilities that come with my role,” Carrick stated during a news conference on Friday. “This doesn’t alter our daily approach or our focus on making long-term decisions for the team’s strategy.”

“I’m not entering this thinking it’s just a week-to-week, game-to-game situation; we want to plan for improvement that extends beyond this season.”

“What I can control is how we support the players and the environment we create around the group. That’s my primary focus, and we’ll see what happens after that.”

The club emphasized in their announcement that Carrick’s appointment lasts until the end of the season.

Interestingly, he has been given the title of head coach instead of “interim” or “caretaker.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was designated as caretaker when he took on the role temporarily in 2018, while Ralf Rangnick was appointed interim in 2021.

“I’m in this position because I enjoy it and feel privileged to be here,” Carrick expressed. “That’s my stance; the title or contract length doesn’t change my commitment.”

“I’m focused on doing my best, bringing in my experience to help us reach our goals.”

Aside from his three games in charge of United over four years ago, Carrick’s managerial experience is limited to two-and-a-half years as Middlesbrough’s manager, a role he held until his dismissal in June 2025.

“I feel confident in this position, I understand what it takes to succeed,” he added. “Having worked closely with Jose [Mourinho] and Ole, it felt like a natural progression when I took over.”

“I understand the scrutiny that comes with this role; questions arise until we achieve results. That’s just part of it. All I can say is I feel at home and am eager to get to work.”
