Vinai Venkatesham, CEO of Tottenham Hotspur, has acknowledged that the men’s team has “fallen short of our expectations this season.” He emphasized the necessity for the club to enhance its quality, experience, and leadership in order to compete consistently at the highest levels.
The club leadership has been receiving increasing pressure from fans—and even from within the team—to clarify their plans amid a series of disappointing performances that have dropped Thomas Frank’s squad to 14th place in the Premier League standings.
Joining Spurs in April 2025, Venkatesham has seen his role grow significantly since Daniel Levy’s unexpected departure in September, which coincided with a substantial reshuffling of the club’s top management.
“Opportunities for a genuine reset are rare for clubs of our size, and we are committed to making the most of this moment by implementing necessary changes behind the scenes to compete consistently at the highest level,” Venkatesham stated in a comprehensive message to supporters.
“Football has evolved dramatically in recent years. While our club has adapted and enjoyed remarkable success, we acknowledge that we haven’t always kept pace in crucial areas.”
“We all recognize the gap between our current position and our aspirations. While we understand that progress takes time, we share your impatience for improvement. Our fans expect victories and performances to be proud of, and we’re aware that the men’s first team has not met our standards this season.”
Venkatesham’s remarks covered a range of topics, including the academy and player services. His comments on recruitment were particularly significant as Spurs have been one of the Premier League’s most active teams in the ongoing January transfer window, with notable moves like transferring Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace and acquiring Conor Gallagher from Atlético Madrid.
“We believe in our current squad, but we need to bring in additional quality, experience, and leadership to ensure consistent performance at the highest level,” he said. “Achieving this requires a proactive recruitment strategy and a wage structure that supports our ambitions.
“We are fully focused on strengthening the squad during January when suitable opportunities arise, while also recognizing that the most substantial player movements typically occur in the summer. Our priority is to make signings that genuinely advance our goals, and we will remain disciplined in that pursuit.
“Player trading also involves knowing when to sell and being decisive about letting go of players who are not part of our future plans. This is vital for maximizing value and adhering to financial fair play regulations. Contrary to common belief, we are not exempt from these rules and must manage our squad development accordingly.”
Head coach Frank’s standing among Spurs fans has diminished recently, following heavy defeats to rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, compounded by a series of unproductive performances. This week, Spurs announced the addition of former Everton defender John Heitinga to Frank’s coaching staff as an assistant.
Complicating Frank’s situation is a growing list of injuries, with long-term absentees like James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski also sidelined along with Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur.
“While coaching is undeniably important, and we have bolstered Thomas Frank’s coaching team with the appointment of John Heitinga, optimizing performance extends beyond coaching,” Venkatesham added. “We must excel in performance services, including medical care, sports science, nutrition, and psychology, to ensure our players are fit and ready to compete at the highest level.”

Following a late defeat against Bournemouth, defender Micky van de Ven clashed with some travelling Spurs fans, a situation echoed by João Palhinha and Pedro Porro, who were also pulled away from the fans. This incident reflects the growing disconnect between the team and its supporters.
“We recognize the existing distance between the club and our supporters, and we are committed to rebuilding that connection,” Venkatesham stated. “With your feedback, we have implemented initiatives such as the new Sonny mural, alterations to ticketing, and a trial for a singing section, and we will tirelessly collaborate with the Fan Advisory Board.”
The most substantial portion of Venkatesham’s statement focused on the fans, acknowledging the need to mend relationships.
“Tottenham Hotspur cannot thrive without you, our supporters. Our existence is built on the loyalty and passion of those who back us, and we do not take for granted the significance of supporting our club,” Venkatesham remarked, also highlighting the women’s team as a “key area of focus.” “Your commitment is invaluable. Thank you for your continued support. We are dedicated to shaping a future that reflects that commitment.”
