Paris Saint-Germain is wrapping up negotiations for the transfer of Dro Fernández, who hails from Barcelona‘s academy, according to sources close to the situation.
Following extensive discussions on Saturday between the European champions and the 18-year-old Spaniard’s agent—who also represents PSG manager Luis Enrique—a preliminary agreement has been reached for a contract lasting until 2030. Only a few minor details remain to be finalized.
– Barcelona taken aback by Fernández’s transfer request
– Flick cites Rashford’s interest in Barcelona as a model for young players
– Sources: Ter Stegen nearing loan move to Girona
PSG is set to activate Fernández’s €6 million ($7 million) release clause to acquire one of the brightest young midfielders in the game.
This season, Fernández has made five appearances for Barca’s first team, but sources indicate he believes moving on from the club where he began his journey is the best decision for his future.
ESPN reported on Friday that Barcelona was shocked after Fernández expressed his intention to leave this January by invoking his release clause.
Barcelona had anticipated that Fernández would renew his contract after celebrating his 18th birthday this week, which would have given them an opportunity to increase his €6 million release clause.
Sources revealed to ESPN that Borussia Dortmund was among the clubs expressing significant interest in signing Fernández.
Clubs throughout Europe, particularly in Germany and England, have been scouting the talented attacking midfielder for years, with Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Chelsea being notable past contenders for his signature.
However, former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique, who spoke with Fernández over the phone, was instrumental in persuading him to join the Ligue 1 team, sources said.
PSG is actively seeking reinforcements in midfield and views Fernández as an excellent option due to both his skill and the affordability of his release clause.
This marks the second instance in which PSG has successfully attracted a talent from Barcelona’s La Masia, the first being Xavi Simons in 2019.
