Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha is feeling optimistic about the team’s prospects under interim coach Michael Carrick, following a 2-0 victory over Manchester City in Carrick’s debut match in charge.
Carrick, aged 44, assumed control of the team until the season’s end after Rubén Amorim was dismissed in early January, having managed the club for 14 months.
“We’re still getting to know [Michael] Carrick,” Cunha remarked, as reported by Globoesporte.
“He is highly respected, not just at United but across the Premier League as well.”
This marks the second occasion Carrick, a former United player, has served as caretaker for the team, having previously led the squad for three games during the 2021-22 season.
Despite criticism from United legend and pundit Roy Keane regarding Carrick’s return, Cunha stated, “He [Carrick] has made a significant positive impact here and brings a winning mentality that is essential for the club. He understands the road to victory.”
Cunha described Saturday’s achievement as “the most significant win” since he joined Old Trafford last summer for £62.5 million ($83.7 million) from Wolves.
The Brazil international entered as a substitute and contributed with an assist to Patrick Dorgu for United’s second goal against City.

“Considering everything, I believe this was the most crucial victory since my arrival at United,” Cunha expressed. “We recognize the significance of this match and the caliber of the opponent.
“It’s one of the toughest contests in England. Yet, when you step onto the pitch representing a club of Manchester United’s stature, you must always put forth your best effort, particularly in matches like these.
“The expectations are high, and we must meet them. I’m pleased to have contributed with an assist, but I’m even more thrilled with the three points. I hope this marks the start of a new era for our team.”
Currently, United sits fifth in the Premier League, one spot and one point behind fourth-place Liverpool, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying position. Having been eliminated from the FA Cup earlier this month, United is not participating in European competitions this season.
“Now we have the remainder of the season dedicated solely to the league, and our objective is to return to the Champions League,” Cunha asserted.
“It’s entirely in our hands, and we will strive to give our best.”
