Man United aim to keep…

Manchester United is set to initiate discussions with captain Bruno Fernandes regarding his future, with plans to retain him at Old Trafford for at least another year, according to sources at ESPN, especially as the World Cup approaches.

Last summer, Fernandes nearly joined Al Hilal, and there is anticipated interest in the Portugal international at the end of the current season.

United will allow the 31-year-old to make his own decision regarding his next steps, though their preference is to retain their captain during what is expected to be another transitional summer, as a new permanent manager prepares to take over from Ruben Amorim.

Fernandes is under contract until 2027, with the option for an additional year, potentially keeping him with the club until June 2028.

There was surprise within the club following an interview published in December where Fernandes suggested he felt the club wanted him to depart last summer, especially as it contradicted previous comments he made in an October interview.

According to sources, United plans to seek clarity from Fernandes and his representatives about his future before the World Cup.

Though Fernandes has stated he won’t reach a decision until after the tournament, the club is eager to solidify their transfer strategies ahead of time.

A significant portion of the summer budget has already been allocated to strengthening the midfield, with targets such as Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba being among the top targets. If Fernandes were to leave, it would be crucial to find a suitable replacement.

United is focused on securing young talent before the January transfer deadline.
