Emma Hayes, the coach of the United States, has expressed confidence in Trinity Rodman‘s readiness to embrace greater responsibilities as she returns to the national team for the first time since April 2025.
Rodman is included in Hayes’ NWSL-focused roster for a training camp in Southern California, which will feature matches against Paraguay on Jan. 24 and Chile on Jan. 27.

Due to a persistent back injury, the 23-year-old forward has only appeared once for the U.S. women’s national team since her stellar performance in the 2024 Olympic gold medal win, netting a goal just six minutes into a 2-0 victory against Brazil in April.
“I’ve told her this week that we’ve missed her in many ways, especially because she brings a vibrant personality that enhances our environment,” Hayes shared with ESPN’s “Futbol W.”
“I’ve assigned her some responsibilities this week, which I believe is beneficial for her. She’s eager to take the next steps in her career, and having her back is a hopeful sign for a strong year ahead.”
Rodman is currently listed on the USWNT roster as “unattached,” making her the only player with that designation. This is uncommon for the team, as her contract with the Washington Spirit ended last year, leaving her as a free agent.
Her future, along with its potential implications for the NWSL, has been a significant topic of discussion since the concluding NWSL Championship in late November.
During the championship match, Rodman played a limited role off the bench as Washington faced their second consecutive championship defeat, continuing to recover from an MCL sprain sustained with the Spirit in October.
Now fit enough to rejoin the USWNT, Hayes emphasized that Rodman will need time and dedication to regain her optimal performance level.
“Many are involved in ensuring Trin not only returns to her desired level but also sustains it,” said Hayes. “She’s been proactive in understanding her body and training effectively. We’ve discussed that recovery takes time, and building strength consistently is crucial for her back to handle the demands of the sport.”
“This year, it’s essential for her to take responsibility, both on and off the field, to maintain regular care. It’s about maximizing the other 22 hours of her day. If she can do that, I expect her to excel.”
