The MLS summer transfer window, also referred to as the secondary transfer window, will be open until September for the 2026 season. This change continues the league’s efforts to synchronize its schedule with other major global soccer leagues.
“For the first time in twenty years, the Secondary Transfer Window will extend into September (excluding the COVID-adjusted 2020 season), allowing the MLS transfer deadline to coincide with leading leagues worldwide. This provides MLS teams with increased opportunities to secure top-tier international talent as they strive for a spot in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs,” stated the league in a press release on Thursday.
The secondary transfer window is scheduled to run from July 13 to September 2, while the primary window will open on January 26 and close on March 26.
In 2025, the MLS experienced a notable influx of international talent during the secondary window, highlighted by the signings of Son Heung-Min (LAFC), Rodrigo De Paul (Inter Miami CF), and Thomas Müller (Vancouver Whitecaps FC).
During the secondary window, MLS added a total of 10 designated players and 12 players through the U22 initiative.
This announcement follows last November’s revelation that MLS would transition to a summer-to-spring regular season format starting in 2027. Currently, unlike most international leagues, MLS operates from February to November.
However, there may be challenges ahead for the summer-to-spring transition, as reported by ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle, who noted that the Major League Soccer Players Association has not yet given its approval for the proposed calendar change.
On Thursday, deadlines for roster compliance (February 20) and roster freeze (October 9) for the 2026 season were also disclosed, alongside new regulations. These include the removal of limits on cash trades between clubs each season and the elimination of age restrictions and limits on the number of intraleague loans per season.
The MLS season is set to kick off on February 21, with some teams returning to action earlier for the Concacaf Champions Cup, which begins on February 3.
