Arbeloa Lauds Bellinghams…

Álvaro Arbeloa has commended Jude Bellingham for his “leadership” and “winning mentality” following his impressive goalscoring display during this week’s 6-1 Champions League victory against AS Monaco. He described the result as a possible “turning point” in Real Madrid‘s mixed season.

The England midfielder Bellingham netted the sixth goal during Tuesday’s dominant performance at the Bernabéu and celebrated with a celebratory gesture that he clarified was in response to claims regarding his off-field behavior.

Arbeloa’s coaching tenure began last week with a setback in the Copa del Rey, but the team has since rebounded with victories over Levante and Monaco, gearing up for a match against third-placed Villarreal on Saturday.

When asked about Bellingham’s contributions this season, Arbeloa emphasized, “I can only comment on what’s happening currently. In the matches and training sessions with me, Jude has demonstrated his skill as a player, along with his leadership and character. His effort in the recent game against Monaco was outstanding.”

Bellingham, who began the season recovering from shoulder surgery, has now made 16 LaLiga appearances in 2025-26, registering four goals and three assists, while also scoring twice in the Champions League.

Arbeloa remarked, “He’s a player with a winning mentality and possesses all the qualities needed for a Real Madrid player. Considering his youth and potential, I am thrilled with him.”

Following his predecessor Xabi Alonso’s departure after a defeat against Barcelona in the Spanish Supercopa final and some disappointing results prior to Christmas, Arbeloa is aiming to build momentum.

As Madrid approaches the Villarreal game, they sit just one point behind Barça at the top of the LaLiga standings. “In the 10 days I’ve been a coach, I hope the match against Monaco will mark a turning point for us. While there’s room for improvement, the players are eager to work, which boosts my confidence,” Arbeloa stated on Friday.

He added, “I can only discuss what I’ve witnessed since I started last Tuesday. I can’t comment on changes or player sentiments, but I can say that the players have been welcoming and enthusiastic about embracing new ideas.”

Arbeloa also confirmed that forward Rodrygo would return from injury for Saturday’s match and noted he hasn’t discussed Vinícius Júnior‘s contract status with him. Vinícius was named MVP for the Monaco game after contributing to three goals and scoring one.

While reports indicate that Alonso’s exit has cleared a significant hurdle for contract negotiations, a substantial financial gap remains. “The contract situation is not within my purview; it depends on Vinícius and the club,” Arbeloa explained. “My role is to maximize the players’ potential. Naturally, I want Vini to continue making history with Real Madrid.”
