Howe: Football played on…

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe emphasized that “football is won on the pitch, not through financial power,” as his team prepares for Sunday’s match against Aston Villa.

This upcoming encounter features two clubs outside of the traditional ‘big six’ that have made their mark both in the Premier League and European competitions in recent years. Currently, Unai Emery’s side sits third in the league, while the Magpies are aiming for European qualification.

Both teams have navigated the financial regulations around profitability and sustainability, but Howe is determined to let the performances on the field dictate their league standings, rather than financial resources.

When asked if the Premier League feels more open, or if teams with larger payrolls will hold an advantage, Howe responded: “I’ve never believed that finances should determine the league table, even though many argue that teams with bigger wage bills usually finish higher up.

“While some with more expertise might argue that wage bills correspond to league standings, I prefer to think differently. We must find ways to win matches that will disrupt expectations and elevate our position.”

“That has been my guiding principle from the beginning of my management career: football is played on the pitch—not with money.”

The recent Deloitte Football Money League revealed Liverpool as the highest-earning English club for the first time, with Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Chelsea also ranking in the top 10.

Aston Villa ranked 14th, while Newcastle came in at 17th, with West Ham barely making the top 20. Howe highlighted the necessity of boosting revenue for future success.

He commented: “The recent financial rankings caught my interest as they reveal we have significant growth potential in terms of revenue. I understand many might be fatigued by our discussions about this, but it is an essential reality.

“Enhancing our revenue streams is crucial, and I know there’s substantial work being done behind the scenes to facilitate that.”

“I have always believed that, regardless of the situation, it’s vital to outperform your available resources. You have to strive for excellence. Every ounce of effort from the squad must be harnessed.

“We are confident we can accomplish great things, regardless of any financial constraints. Our goal is to push for the best possible outcome. While I hesitate to define what ‘the best’ will be, we aim for the maximum.”
