Van Dijk: Liverpools…

Captain Virgil van Dijk asserts that while Liverpool is missing consistency, the team’s unity remains intact. This follows a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday, which significantly hurt their chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

The reigning Premier League champions managed to rally from two goals down at the Vitality Stadium, only for Cherries’ winger Amine Adli to score the game-winner in the dying moments.

Despite arriving in Dorset on a 13-match unbeaten streak, thanks to a 3-0 victory against Marseille, Liverpool had drawn their last four league matches, managing only four points from a possible 15 in 2026.

With manager Arne Slot’s team trailing behind leaders Arsenal, the battle for a top-four finish is becoming increasingly challenging following another setback in their disappointing title defense.

“There’s no doubt about our togetherness,” Van Dijk noted on Liverpool’s website. “However, we still need to find the consistency we’re searching for; that’s the reality.”

“There’s been a lot of praise for our performances and individual efforts, but then to lose like we did against Bournemouth just a few days later is hard to process. It’s something we need to cope with. We aim to perform well and win matches, but it didn’t happen this time.”

Van Dijk also defended his individual performance in the challenging weather on the south coast. He admitted to misjudging a ball before Evanilson’s opening goal and being responsible for Bournemouth’s second goal when he played Álex Jiménez onside, and he struggled to respond to a long throw-in that led to Adli’s late winner.

At the time of Jimenez’s 33rd-minute goal, Liverpool were down to ten men as substitute Wataru Endo was poised to enter for the injured Joe Gomez.

Van Dijk managed to pull one back before halftime and noted regarding Adli’s goal: “I felt like I was clearly blocked, but the referee and VAR didn’t see it that way, and we have to accept that. From my perspective, it was a foul.” He acknowledged that the first goal was difficult to read due to the windy conditions and expressed frustration over conceding two quick goals.

Slot: Liverpool ran out of energy in last-minute loss to Bournemouth

Bournemouth has rebounded impressively after an 11-match winless streak, securing seven points from their last nine, despite losing top scorer Antoine Semenyo and managing ongoing injury concerns, easing fears of relegation.

Adli, who has stepped up for Bournemouth in Semenyo’s absence, stated: “I’m a team player, and seeing my teammates happy is my priority. It’s a remarkable feeling to witness the joy in the dressing room and among the fans; those moments are incredible. It’s been a challenging period, but we’re all supporting each other. This victory is truly significant for us.”
