ATHENS, Greece — Tragically, seven supporters of the Greek soccer club PAOK Salonika lost their lives in a minibus accident in Romania while en route to a Europa League match against Lyon, as confirmed by the Greek government on Tuesday.

“I am deeply troubled by the tragic news of the accident in Romania that has taken the lives of seven young Greeks,” stated Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. “The Greek government and our embassy are actively coordinating with local officials to provide all necessary assistance.”

“In these trying times, I offer my heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and the entire PAOK community,” Mitsotakis continued. “We also hope for a swift recovery for those injured. Our thoughts are with them.”

PAOK is maintaining direct communication with the government to support the families of the victims and the injured fans, while also sending club representatives to Romania.

PAOK president Ivan Savvidis described the incident as “an unspeakable tragedy,” expressing his devastation over the loss of young fans who traveled to support their team.

“I grieve alongside the families and the millions of our fellow citizens,” Savvidis remarked.

In a show of solidarity, rival clubs, including Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, and Aris, have also expressed their condolences and support.

The match in France is set to take place on Thursday.

Lyon has released a statement offering its “sincere condolences” to PAOK and announced that a tribute will be held during Thursday’s match at Groupama Stadium.
