Rodri Slams Referees…

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has expressed that referees need to maintain neutrality, criticizing the decision that allowed Tottenham’s opening goal in the recent 2-2 draw.

Initially, City seemed poised to close the gap on Arsenal, sitting at the top of the Premier League, after securing a two-goal lead in the first half through Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo, but Spurs mounted a spirited comeback.

Dominic Solanke scored twice, including a brilliant backheel in the 70th minute, but it was his first goal early in the second half that angered Rodri and manager Pep Guardiola.

Solanke appeared to have kicked through the back of Marc Guehi’s leg to score. Despite a VAR review, the officials decided no foul had occurred.

City had faced unfavorable VAR decisions in previous matches against Newcastle, Manchester United, and Wolves earlier this year, leading Rodri to question the officials’ impartiality.

The Spanish midfielder remarked on Australian broadcaster Stan Sport, “I know we have won a lot, and people may not want us to win, but the referee needs to be impartial. It’s honestly not fair.”

“It’s frustrating for us because we put in so much effort in these situations, and now we have to deal with these decisions. While we can come back from it, it’s disheartening when it’s so evident that a foul occurred. He made contact with the leg, and with the push, the ball went in.”

“We need to be vigilant about these minor details; otherwise, it will be difficult for everyone, as this league hinges on small details — everything counts. Today was particularly tough for us in this regard.”

City previously saw a VAR decision go against them in their 2-0 Carabao Cup victory over Newcastle, and Diogo Dalot escaped a red card for a tackle on Jérémy Doku during the Manchester derby.

Rodri, reflecting on a missed penalty call against Wolves the previous week, expressed his frustration over this latest decision. “I’m uncertain how to react. Watching the footage, it’s clear. On the pitch, it’s hard to see, but it was a clear foul in the initial play of the goal.

“It’s evident to see, and if VAR is in place, it should address such situations. These small details can be game-changers. If they don’t score that goal, perhaps we win.

“It’s been game after game, and it’s becoming unsustainable. Although I typically refrain from commenting on officiating, I greatly respect their role. However, they need to hone in on these critical moments. He kicked the leg; it’s unmistakable,” Rodri added.

“He anticipated the movement of Marc’s leg, and it’s an obvious foul. It’s not just about today; it’s been happening for two or three matches in a row, and I honestly can’t explain why.”

A Premier League Match Centre statement on Sunday stated: “The referee’s decision to award the goal was reviewed and confirmed by VAR, which deemed that Solanke’s challenge on Guehi was not a foul since he played the ball.”

Pep Guardiola also expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision not to overturn Solanke’s goal, telling Sky Sports, “Of course, it’s not right. It’s happened again. What can I say? Marc had possession of the ball and was kicked from behind, resulting in a goal. What more can I say? Nothing. It’s another instance.”
