Dompé Faces Six

HAMBURG, Germany — French footballer Jean-Luc Dompé has received a substantial fine from his Bundesliga club due to an incident involving drunk driving.

Hamburg SV announced that the 30-year-old winger has been issued a “record fine in the six-figure range.” Following the incident, he expressed remorse during a meeting on Tuesday.

Dompé was pulled over at a traffic checkpoint in late January, where a breath test indicated the presence of alcohol. Consequently, the club has suspended him until further notice.

Hamburg has stated that Dompé will be unavailable for the remainder of the week but will be allowed to return to training afterward.

“I realize that merely apologizing is insufficient,” Dompé commented through the club. “I have definitely failed in my duty as a role model.

“I made significant mistakes and take full responsibility for the repercussions. I understand the disappointment of the club, the coaching staff, and all the fans who have stood by me until now. I sincerely regret letting the team down during this critical time in the season.”

Currently, Hamburg, which was promoted back to the Bundesliga last season after a seven-year hiatus, is sitting in 13th place out of 18 teams.
