Karim Benzema expressed his desire to bring silverware to his new Saudi Pro League team, Al Hilal, describing it as the “Real Madrid of Asia.”

The French striker opted against a contract extension with Al Ittihad that would have kept him there beyond June, ultimately deciding to join Al Hilal on Monday.

In his first comments following the move, the former Madrid captain and 2022 Ballon d’Or recipient stated on the club’s website: “I’m pleased to be here. After my first training session with the team and the coach, I’m so happy and excited to be part of this group.”

“This is a strong team with a rich history; they’ve claimed numerous trophies,” he added.

“It feels similar to Real Madrid in Asia. Everything is positive here, the fans are passionate, the team plays well, and there are great players with a strong mentality.”

“I’ve always respected this team. Competing against them with Madrid was always challenging, so I have fond memories. Today, I’m thrilled to officially be an Al Hilal player.”

Sources indicate that Benzema, 38, felt undervalued by the contract extension proposed by Al Ittihad.

The Al Ittihad offer would have resulted in the veteran forward effectively playing for free, as stated by sources.

Benzema, who also received proposals from European clubs, chose to remain in Saudi Arabia, partly due to an image rights agreement that extends until 2030.

His decision to join Al Hilal, reportedly facilitated by PIF, has upset his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, captain of rivals Al Nassr.

According to sources, Ronaldo refused to participate in a match on Monday in protest against PIF’s insufficient investments in Al Nassr, which he believes have benefitted Al Hilal instead.

Ronaldo seeks to achieve his first significant title with Al Nassr, currently sitting second in the Saudi Pro League, just one point behind Al Hilal.

Benzema, a key player in Al Ittihad’s league and King’s Cup victories last season, expressed his eagerness for further success.

“It sends a clear message,” he remarked. “I have a strong ambition, and I will put in the effort on the field. My goal is to help this team win trophies. With a solid team and passionate fans, together we can achieve that, inshallah.”

Having joined Saudi Arabia in the summer of 2023, Benzema brought with him an impressive tally of 25 trophies won with Madrid, including four LaLiga, three Copa del Rey, and five Champions League titles.

He has scored eight goals in 14 league matches this season.

Benzema’s debut with Al Hilal is set for Thursday against Al Okhdood.
