Thomas Frank declined to confirm whether his “passionate” Tottenham Hotspur captain, Cristian Romero, faced any disciplinary action for his recent social media comments, but he acknowledged that he personally wouldn’t have made such statements.
Romero attracted attention on Monday when he posted on Instagram shortly before the transfer window closed, revealing that he played while ill during Sunday’s 2-2 match against Manchester City. He criticized the situation, describing it as “disgraceful” for the squad to have only 11 fit players.
This commentary resonated with many frustrated Spurs supporters, particularly since the club has seen little transfer activity since acquiring Conor Gallagher on January 14 and has lost nine players to injuries since the start of 2026.

As his team prepared for the upcoming match against Manchester United, Frank remarked: “If you want to understand what he meant, you should ask him directly; that’s the correct approach to take.”
“Cuti [Romero] is a very passionate and ambitious player. He truly gives his all on the pitch and wants to win every match.
“Sometimes, his fiery spirit may lead to outbursts, which is what occurred this time. We’ve addressed it internally.”
When pressed about whether Romero had faced fines or disciplinary measures—considering he had also expressed his frustrations on social media following a 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth on January 7—Frank sidestepped the inquiry.
He noted, “There are many ways to handle situations. Cuti has been exceptional for us this season and in previous ones.
“I wouldn’t have acted that way. That’s my perspective.
“The beauty of written communication is that it can be interpreted in many ways, and the true intent behind it is only known by Cuti or those who have spoken to him.
“Ultimately, this demonstrates Cuti’s immense passion—his desire to win and to collaborate with his teammates towards achieving great success. However, you should speak to him next time you have the chance.”
