Minnesota United is on the verge of finalizing a deal to acquire Colombian international forward James Rodríguez, as confirmed by a source to ESPN.

If the agreement is concluded, Rodríguez would not count as a designated player, and the contract is expected to be short-term, effective at least until the World Cup this summer.

Rodríguez, 34, has been without a club since December, when his contract with Liga MX team León expired. He is actively seeking a new team to maintain his form ahead of the World Cup.

Minnesota is aiming for a more dynamic playing style under new coach Cameron Knowles, and Rodríguez’s creativity would be an asset. His proficiency in set pieces would also complement a Minnesota squad that excelled in that area last season.

The termination of his time with León wraps up another chapter in what has been a varied club career for Rodríguez in recent years.

Since his two-year loan at Bayern Munich from 2017 to 2019, Rodríguez has played for several clubs including Everton, Al Rayyan, Olympiacos, São Paulo, Rayo Vallecano, and León. Last season with León, he recorded three goals and two assists in 14 matches.

Rodríguez has continued to excel on the international stage.

He was awarded the Golden Ball at the 2024 Copa América, contributing one goal and six assists as he helped Colombia reach the final, where they narrowly lost to Argentina by a score of 1-0.

Overall, Rodríguez has made 122 appearances for Colombia, scoring 31 goals. He is anticipated to be a key player for Colombia in the upcoming FIFA World Cup. He previously earned the Golden Boot at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, scoring six goals and providing two assists during Colombia’s quarterfinal run.

Rodríguez began his professional journey in Colombia with Envigado before transferring to Banfield in Argentina in 2008. He has since played for renowned clubs such as Porto, AS Monaco, and Real Madrid.

The Athletic first reported on the advanced discussions between Rodríguez and Minnesota United.
