Pep Guardiola has labeled Erling Haaland as “the best striker in the world” ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Liverpool, despite his recent struggles in form throughout 2026.
The Norwegian striker has not found the back of the net from open play this year in the Premier League, with his last goals coming during a 3-0 victory over West Ham on December 20.
Speculation has arisen that Guardiola might consider benching Haaland in favor of Omar Marmoush, who netted twice against Newcastle last Wednesday.
However, Guardiola has stood by Haaland, asserting that the 25-year-old continues to be the best goalscorer globally.
“Erling is the best striker in the world,” Guardiola stated.
When asked if Haaland would start against Liverpool, Guardiola replied: “I don’t know, but I always say Erling is the best.”
Manchester City must secure a victory over Liverpool to maintain pressure on Arsenal, who currently lead the table.
This match poses a formidable challenge for Guardiola, who has recorded only one Premier League win at Anfield since taking charge in 2016.
