Colombia Star Rodríguez…

Minnesota United officially announced the signing of Colombia international star forward James Rodríguez on Friday, with the deal set to last through the upcoming World Cup.

Rodríguez will not be classified as a Designated Player, as the agreement is short-term, running through the World Cup, with an option for the club to extend it through December 2026.

The 34-year-old Rodríguez was a free agent since December after his contract with Liga MX side León expired. He needed to secure a new club to maintain his form ahead of the World Cup.

“James is a player of undeniable quality, vision, and experience at the highest level. We’re thrilled to add his creativity and football intelligence to our squad. However, this is about strengthening the collective rather than focusing on one individual. This move is aimed at enhancing our overall team dynamic,” stated Minnesota’s sporting director, Khaled El-Ahmad.

“We believe that within our structure and culture, James can contribute significantly. Our goal is to integrate him effectively and ensure his contributions elevate the entire team. We’re optimistic that together we can have a meaningful impact for our community, club, and fans.”

With new manager Cameron Knowles aiming for a more expansive style, Rodríguez’s creativity will be instrumental in achieving that vision. His prowess in set pieces will also add a valuable dimension to a Minnesota team that excelled in that area last season.

Rodríguez’s departure from León marked yet another chapter in his recent career, which has seen him traverse multiple clubs.

“I’m very excited about this new chapter in my life,” Rodríguez expressed. “I aim to be at my best to bring joy to this city and to everyone who believes in me. I’m eager to meet the passionate fans of Minnesota. I am also a passionate player who aims to give my all on the field and always strives for victory.”

Since his two-year loan from 2017 to 2019 with Bayern Munich, Rodríguez has played for various clubs including Everton, Al Rayyan, Olympiacos, São Paulo, Rayo Vallecano, and León. Last season, he registered three goals and two assists in 14 matches for the Mexican side.

However, it is on the international stage where Rodríguez continues to excel.

He earned the Golden Ball at the 2024 Copa América, contributing one goal and six assists while leading Colombia to the final, where they were narrowly defeated by Argentina, 1-0.

Overall, Rodríguez boasts 122 caps for Colombia with 31 goals to his name. He is anticipated to be a key attacking option for Colombia in this summer’s FIFA World Cup. Previously, he won the Golden Boot in the 2014 FIFA World Cup held in Brazil, scoring six goals and providing two assists during Colombia’s quarterfinal run.

Rodríguez launched his professional career in Colombia with Envigado before transferring to Argentine club Banfield in 2008. He later played for renowned teams such as Porto, AS Monaco, and Real Madrid.
