Arne Slot expressed that Marc Guéhi should have received a red card for his foul on Mohamed Salah during Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Manchester City.
Erling Haaland netted the decisive goal for City in stoppage time at Anfield, while Rayan Cherki had a goal ruled out due to a red card incident involving Dominik Szoboszlai during the build-up.
Slot contended that Guéhi should have been sent off earlier in the match after fouling Salah on the edge of the penalty area.
“When considering the decisions that could have been made, were you referring to the disallowed goal at City, the penalty awarded against us earlier in the season, the evident red card on Mo Salah in the second half, or perhaps this [Szoboszlai’s red] decision?” Slot commented.
“This pertains to just two games, and Liverpool is aware of how many significant decisions I can identify across other games as well, with countless pivotal moments that could have swung either way.”
“While I can accept the referee adhering to the rulebook and Dominik committing a foul on Haaland, which was a clear shirt-pull, I’m frustrated that Guéhi’s clear infringement on Salah has gone unpunished. Salah scores in those situations nearly every time–perhaps that’s an exaggeration–but still, it’s a red card,” Slot argued.
“I believe the Sunderland manager is pleased with that red card decision. If we strictly follow the regulations, Guéhi’s shirt-pull on Mo Salah should be punished with a red card, especially considering that Salah has been successful in those situations countless times.”
– Man City’s thrilling comeback against Liverpool keeps the Premier League title race intense
– Erling Haaland on the disallowed goal: ‘Award the goal and ignore red cards, it’s straightforward.’
– Is Pep Guardiola contemplating a departure from Man City? Only he knows.
“While I can accept the decision regarding Dominik’s red card, one has to appreciate the excitement of football and wonder if it would be more enjoyable to let the play continue for a goal. However, as the Sunderland manager, you’d prefer the red card outcome.”
“I am merely calling for adherence to the rules… My primary frustration lies with the clear foul committed on Mo Salah at a crucial moment, one-on-one with the goalkeeper at 0-0.”
With this recent defeat, Liverpool remains in sixth place in the Premier League, trailing fourth-placed Manchester United by five points.
“I’m filled with anger and disappointment,” Slot admitted.
“In the first half, City controlled the game, but they didn’t create many significant chances apart from Haaland’s early opportunity. They had better possession, but the progress we’ve made in the last few months was evident to everyone.”
“In the second half, our intensity improved significantly; we pressed them all over the pitch, showcasing the biggest enhancement in our gameplay over the last two or three months.”
“It’s a substantial achievement for our team to perform so well against one of the top teams in England in terms of ball possession. I expected more than just being one goal ahead before conceding two.”}
