Leeds United goalkeeper Lucas Perri emerged as the hero in the penalty shootout following a tense encounter with Birmingham City.
Perri participated in the shootout during their FA Cup fourth-round clash on Sunday, relying on notes that detailed potential shooting patterns of Birmingham’s players.
However, when it came time for the penalties, he found himself relying purely on instinct as he struggled to recognize the Birmingham players, who were lacking visible numbers on their shorts.
“Unfortunately, the first two penalties were tough for me since I couldn’t see their numbers on their shorts,” Perri shared with TNT Sports. “For the third one, I had to trust my instincts because we weren’t sure where he would place the shot. I’m glad to have helped the club.”
Perri successfully stopped a penalty from Tommy Doyle and then watched as Patrick Roberts sent his shot soaring over the goalpost.
Although Perri’s notes indicated that Roberts would likely shoot to the left, the information proved irrelevant, as TV cameras struggled to capture Perri’s preparatory notes for Doyle.
The Brazilian shot-stopper was brought in as Leeds’ primary goalkeeper upon their promotion to the Premier League last summer but had recently lost his starting position.
Manager Daniel Farke expressed disappointment in Perri after he conceded the decisive goal in a thrilling 4-3 defeat to Newcastle United in January, leading to his replacement by Karl Darlow.
Nonetheless, Perri was reinstated for the FA Cup clash, where he made an impressive save against Jay Stansfield in the first half before stepping up in the penalty shootout.

Lukas Nmecha’s goal for Leeds was equalized by Roberts, leading to the shootout after a 1-1 draw.
Sean Longstaff, who scored the winning penalty for Leeds, praised Perri, saying: “He was phenomenal throughout the game and particularly during the shootout, making crucial saves. We really had to dig deep for this result, as it’s never easy in the FA Cup.”
Longstaff continued, “When you face a lower-division team away, there’s an expectation to win easily, but it’s rarely that simple. They played exceptionally well. I’m genuinely pleased for Lucas—it’s been a challenging period for him.”
Perri concluded: “It’s always rewarding to perform well. The most significant confidence boost comes from within. While the outcome matters, having a match like this is definitely uplifting. I hope to keep the momentum going.”
