Bristol City halted Wrexham’s bid for a fifth consecutive Sky Bet Championship away victory with a dramatic 2-2 draw at Ashton Gate, thanks to Max Bird’s stunning late equalizer.
Wrexham surged ahead twice, with goals from Ollie Rathbone and a Joe Williams own goal, but City fought back in the second half to earn their share of the points.
Sinclair Armstrong struck early in the second half, and two minutes from the end, Bird unleashed a powerful volley from 20 yards that hit the underside of the crossbar and went in.
The match was crucial for positioning, with the sixth spot in the standings and a playoff berth on the line amidst a bitterly cold night.

City had reignited their promotion hopes with a win at Hull over the weekend but were looking to atone for a heavy 5-0 defeat against Derby in their last home game.
George Tanner narrowly avoided injury after a collision with his own goalkeeper, Radek Vitek, while Neto Borges sent a shot high over the bar from outside the box.
It wasn’t until the 25th minute that either goalkeeper faced a serious challenge when Nathan Broadhead set up George Thomason, and Vitek kept out Callum Doyle’s header under the crossbar.
Mark Sykes appealed fervently for a penalty claiming Dominic Hyam had handled the ball in the Wrexham area, but referee Ruebyn Ricardo dismissed the request.
Wrexham opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Doyle’s cross deflected to Rathbone, who confidently struck a left-footed shot high past Vitek.
City’s players were jeered off at halftime after failing to register a single shot on target.
Robins manager Gerhard Struber made three substitutions at the break, which significantly changed the game’s dynamics, with Armstrong, Delano Burgzorg, and Jason Knight all making an immediate impact.
Arthur Okonkwo made a crucial save from Tomi Horvat and Armstrong just moments after the restart, but he was soon caught out again.
Horvat found Armstrong down the right side, and the substitute expertly navigated a tough angle to slot the ball into the corner of the net.
The game transformed from a cautious opening into an exhilarating end-to-end contest.
Vitek leapt to his left to deny Broadhead, who was looking to replicate his previous goal against City from their earlier meeting in November, while Armstrong shot wide from a similar position to his earlier goal.
Armstrong posed a constant threat with every touch, but Wrexham regained the advantage in the 76th minute.
Issa Kaboré sent a pass into the box, and an unfortunate Williams mishandled it, allowing the ball to slip past Vitek.
Bird’s remarkable volley offered a thrilling finale, but despite George Dobson squandering two excellent chances to secure the win for Wrexham, they held on to claim the sixth position in the table.
