In preparation for the World Cup, Mexico‘s men’s national soccer team will play warm-up matches against Ghana, Australia, and Serbia, as announced by officials on Tuesday.
Mexico will host Ghana on May 22 and will then face Australia on May 30 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The team will return to Mexico to take on Serbia on June 4, though the venues for these matches in Mexico have yet to be confirmed.
The team kicks off its World Cup journey on June 11 against South Africa at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, which will host the tournament’s opening match.
Ivar Sisniega, president of the Mexican Football Federation, commented, “These opponents are ideal for helping the national team prepare for the World Cup.”
Prior to these matches, Mexico will face Iceland on February 25 in Querétaro, and Portugal in Mexico City on March 28, followed by a match against Belgium on March 31 in Chicago.
The Portugal match will mark the reopening of Azteca Stadium, which has remained closed since May 2024.
According to Sisniega, “We’ve been assured the stadium will be ready, including the pitch and seating areas. There is no Plan B; we will play on March 28 as planned without consideration of any alternative scenarios.”
