Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni expressed that the absence of Benfica‘s Gianluca Prestianni from Wednesday’s Champions League match at the Bernabéu stadium was “a victory for all of us.”
Prestianni faced a provisional suspension for one match by UEFA due to accusations of having racially abused Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior during the first leg a week prior.
The young Argentinian traveled to Madrid but did not participate as UEFA denied Benfica’s last-minute appeal regarding his provisional suspension.
Following Madrid’s 2-1 victory on Wednesday, Tchouaméni remarked, “Not allowing this person [Prestianni] to play was the best decision. There are greater matters than football. Today was a triumph for all of us.”
Before the match, Madrid fans showcased a banner in opposition to racism. Tchouaméni praised Vinícius, who netted the game-winner and celebrated by dancing at the corner flag, reminiscent of his only goal celebration from the first leg in Lisbon.
“Vinícius has maintained his confidence,” Tchouaméni noted. “He was highly focused and had yet another outstanding game. I’m very pleased for him.”
Despite Vinícius’ impressive display, Tchouaméni clinched the player of the match honor for the second consecutive game in the Champions League.
The French midfielder scored Madrid’s equalizer on Wednesday, marking his first goal of the season, which helped his team advance to the round of 16.
“I’m performing well,” he said. “I’m striving to do what I know best. I’m thrilled with the goal and I acknowledge that improving is essential. I have a lot of confidence and I aim to give my best in each match as we continue moving forward.”
